Sermon title: Scientists Acknowledge “the Mitochondrial Eve”
Immanuel Baptist Church – Sunday, August 29, 2021
Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden—
that’s a Bible account that modern intellectuals
scoff at and ridicule,
classifying it as ‘a myth’ or ‘a fairytale.’
They say that they reject the biblical account
because modern science refutes it and proves it false.
But the fact is that scientists,
over the past couple hundred years,
have been evil men who rejected God first—
for personal reasons—
and who then grasped at straws,
trying to find any way at all
to come up with some way to explain
the world without God.
An evolutionist admitted this in Nature magazine.
Dr. Scott Todd
of the Dept. of Biology at Kansas State University,
who supports the theory of evolution,
“Even if all the data point to an intelligent designer,
such an hypothesis is excluded from science
because it is not naturalistic.” [ REPEAT ]
So, today’s scientists refuse to admit
that God designed and created life,
even if all the evidence points to that fact.
They don’t want to believe in a Creator,
and so they look for any excuse—
and intentionally overlook the facts—
so they won’t have to admit
that life came by design, not by accident.
They especially don’t want to admit that human life
was created by the God of the Bible,
because that would make them responsible to Him
to obey His laws, which they don’t want to do.
Genesis, the first book in the Bible,
actually gives us two accounts of
the creation of the first humans:
a brief summary in Genesis Chapter 1,
with man’s creation the climax of what God did
over Six Creative Days, and
a more detailed account in Genesis Chapter 2.
Let’s look first at that brief account
that begins at Genesis 1:26. It tells us,
26 Then God said, “Let us make man
in our image, after our likeness.
And let them have dominion over the
fish of the sea and over the birds
of the heavens and over the livestock
and over all the earth and over
every creeping thing that creeps
on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
28 And God blessed them. And God said
“Be fruitful and multiply
and fill the earth and subdue it,
and have dominion over the fish
of the sea and over the birds
of the heavens and over every
living thing that moves on the earth.”
29 And God said,
“Behold, I have given you
every plant yielding seed
that is on the face of all the earth,
and every tree with seed in its fruit.
You shall have them for food.
30 And to every beast of the earth and
to every bird of the heavens and
to everything that creeps on the
earth, everything that has the breath
of life, I have given every green
plant for food.” And it was so.
31 And God saw everything that he had
made, and behold, it was very good.
And there was evening and there
was morning, the sixth day.
All the other living creatures on earth
were placed under man’s authority,
because God made man in his own image.
Some take that to mean God’s physical likeness—
that God hasa human-like face and appearance,
and made man to look like him.
But the more likely meaning is that God made man
with moral, spiritual and intellectual qualities
higher than the animals—
with the ability to think and reason
and be part of God’s family.
Note, too, that Verse 27 says,
“male and female he created them.”
That just sums up in one simple phrase
the more detailed account
that follows immediately in the next Chapter.
It also highlights that gender identity
is determined by God’s creation—
not by human choice or imagination.
Gender is a biological thing—
an unalterable fact of life—
not something subject to change
according to how someone may feel about it.
Someone born with male sex organs is a male,
and someone born with female sex organs is female.
“male and female he created them.”
Later, when puberty takes place,
male and female bodies produce different hormones
that result in different muscular development
as well as female breasts
and male facial hair.
But, even more basic than that,
those who study the human body have long known
that being male or femaleis evident in our cells
at the moment of conception.
A female has two X chromosomes
in every cell of her body.
A male has an X chromosome and a Y chromosome
in every cell of his body.
That difference in the body cells of a man and a woman
can not be altered.
Perverted doctors can make money off
the currently popular gender switching craze,
by administering hormones
or by performing genital mutilation surgery,
but they can not change a man into a woman,
and they can not change a woman into a man.
Even when they start out with a child
and perform those horrible gender-switching mutilations
on a young child or a teenager,
they can not change the child’s sex
from male to female or vice-versa.
The individual who was born female
still has two X chromosomes in every cell of her body,
proving that she is still really a woman.
And the individual who was born male
still has an X and a Y chromosome in every cell of his body.
The perverted sex-change doctors
can administer as many hormones as they want,
and do as many surgeries as they want,
and do as much psychotherapy as they want,
but they can not change a man into a woman.
All they can do is produce a mutilated, messed-up man
who looks like a woman.
Or, they can produce a mutilated, messed-up woman
who looks like a man.
But every cell in the bodies of those individuals
still identifies them
as being of the original gender they were born with.
The mutilated, messed-up man who looks like a woman
still has a male pair of X and Y chromosomes
in every cell of his body,
testifying plainly that he is still a man.
And the mutilated, messed-up woman who looks like a man
still has a female pair of two X chromosomes
in every cell of her body,
testifying plainly that she is still a woman.
God created them “male and female”
and nothing can change that.
They can pass all the trans-gender legislation they want,
forcing people to switch the pronouns “he” and “she”
and forcing people to let messed-up men
into the ladies room,
but it’s all a lie—an obvious falsehood.
Those perverted laws and government decrees
can not in any way over-rule God’s laws
or God’s creation.
More than 3,000 years ago, Deuteronomy 22:5 was written,
“A woman must not wear men’s clothing,
and a man must not wear women’s clothing
for whoever does these things
is detestable to the LORD your God.”
And whoever does these things
is just as detestable to God today.
God created them “male and female”
and it’s detestable to God
for anyone to try to change that,
by cross-dressing, or by hormones
or by sex-change surgery.
Even if they try these things,
they still can’t change the chromosomes.
Regardless of their sex-change efforts,
the X and Y chromosomes remain the same,
proving that they can not change someone’s gender.
After that summary of how God created us
in the First Chapter of Genesis,
the Second Chapter goes on
to give us more details of how he did it.
Beginning with Genesis 2:7, we read,
7 Then the LORD God formed man
from the dust of the ground and
breathed the breath of life
into his nostrils,
and the man became a living being.
It may sound like a matter-of-fact thing that
“God formed man
from the dust of the ground,”
but that statement is really quite profound.
According to the pagan religion of the ancient Scandinavians,
three of their gods took a couple of wooden logs
and carved them into human form,
and then gave those wooden statues
spirit and blood and color,
creating a living man and woman.
The pagan inhabitants of the Philippine Islands
believed that the first man and woman
grew out of split bamboo shoots.
But the Bible tells us that
“God formed man
from the dust of the ground.”
Unlike the pagan stories of creation
the Bible is scientifically accurate,
because our bodies are actually composed of
the very same chemical elements
that are found in
“the dust of the ground,”
or the soil below our feet.
The Lord put it in simple language
for people who had no knowledge of biochemistry,
but what it says is true and
accurately describes the makeup of our bodies.
We are composed of the very same chemicals
that are found in “the dust of the ground.”
The account continues,
8 And the LORD God planted a garden
in Eden, in the east, where He placed
the man He had formed.
9 Out of the ground the LORD God
gave growth to every tree that is
pleasing to the eye and good for food.
And in the middle of the garden were
the tree of life and the tree
of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 Now a river flowed out of Eden
to water the garden, and from there
it branched into four headwaters:
And it goes on to name the rivers
and describe where each one flowed—
one of them being the Euphrates, which today
flows through Turkey, Syria and Iraq.
So, it appears that the Garden of Eden was located
somewhere in that neighborhood of the Middle East.
Verse 15 continues,
15 Then the LORD God took the man
and placed him in the Garden of Eden
to cultivate and keep it.
16 And the LORD God commanded him,
“You may eat freely from every tree
of the garden, 17 but you must not
eat from the tree of the knowledge
of good and evil;
for in the day that you eat of it,
you will surely die.”
We’ll look more closely at that command
in a future sermon, when we look at
how Adam ended up violating it.
But the account here in Genesis Chapter 2
moves right along to the creation of the first woman.
18 The LORD God also said,
“It is not good for the man to be alone.
I will make for him a suitable helper.”
19 And out of the ground
the LORD God formed every beast
of the field and every bird of the air,
and He brought them to the man
to see what he would name each one.
And whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
20 The man gave names to all the
livestock, to the birds of the air,
and to every beast of the field.
But for Adam no suitable helper
21 So the LORD God caused the man
to fall into a deep sleep,
and while he slept,
He took one of the man’s ribs
and closed up the area with flesh.
22 And from the rib
that the LORD God had taken from the man,
He made a woman and brought her to him.
23 And the man said:
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for out of man she was taken.”
24 For this reason a man will leave
his father and mother and be united
to his wife,
and they will become one flesh.
This is a portion of the account
that critics have long singled out to scoff at.
“Ha, ha, ha!” they scoff—“God made a woman
from the man’s rib.”—Ha, ha, ha! Very funny.”
But, in 1996, scientists in Scotland
took some flesh from near the rib of an adult sheep
and grew it into another sheep, they named “Dolly.”
It was the first successful attempt at such cloning.
And it was so similar to what God did with Adam’s rib,
that we could use that word “cloning”
to describe it.
If scientists could take flesh near the rib of an adult sheep
and produce another sheep from it,
God could certainly take Adam’s rib
and produce a woman from it.
The science textbooks tell us that such cloning
was first performed in 1996,
but we know from the Bible
that God did it thousands of year earlier
when forming Adam’s wife from his rib.
Still another scientific discovery
that helps establish faith in the Bible
is the conclusion scientists have reached
that there was what they call a “Mitochondrial Eve.”
The Mitochondria are tiny genetic structures in our cells
that can be used to trace lines of descent—
who descended from whom.
For example, mitochondrial DNA
from England’s Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh,
was used to confirm that bodies of individuals
killed by Bolsheviks in Russia
belonged to members of the royal family
that Philip was descended from.
The term “Mitochondrial Eve” was coined
in a 1987 Science magazine article
about how new research had proved
that all living humans can be traced back
to one particular mother.
Scientists found that mitochondrial DNA shows
that every race and nationality on earth today
came from that one first mother.
That woman, whom the scientists called
“the Mitochondrial Eve”
was the mother of everyone living.
It reminds us that Genesis 3:20 tells us,
“Adam had named his wife "Eve,"
because she was to become
the mother of everyone who was living.”
Yes, immoral and unbelieving scientists
poke fun at this Genesis account,
but their own discoveries
about the chemical makeup of our bodies,
about mitochondrial DNA,
and about how cloning works
add to the weight of evidence
that the Bible account is true.
And, if you believe what Genesis says
about God making Adam “from the dust of the ground”
and building a woman from his rib
to be his wife, the mother of everyone living—
if you believe this—
you are in good company...
...Because our Lord Jesus confirms the account as true
when he says at Matthew 19, Verses 4 and 5,
4 ...“Have you not read that
he who created them from the beginning
made them male and female, 5 and said,
‘Therefore a man shall leave
his father and his mother
and hold fast to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh’?”
Christ quoted that directly from the Book of Genesis,
and stated it as fact.
Anyone who denies the factualness of this Genesis account
denies that Jesus spoke the truth.
Happily, we have mountains of evidence
proving the Bible true from beginning to end.
